Seems newish :)

Am surprised you have this rather obvious take on citizen journalism when a much more non-dualist and highly nonlinear take is available :) It is not trained-experienced-wisdom vs. untrained-hysterical-mob. In the hundred clamorous voices furiously contending, wisdom emerges in the collective from what looks like noise at the individual level. This is rather like the way Dennett describes thinking processes in the brain. Not a linear, orderly process, but a fast-scale Darwinian evolution inside your head, among contending ideas. Substitute 'idea in your head' for 'half truth storyline being tweeted by one #mumbai observer" and you get the evolution of journalistic truth in the social brain. Von Neumann and others discovered how you could build a reliable computer from individual unreliable parts, that's what is going on here.

As for why? Worldly truths can only be triangulated by a diversity of perspectives. Training may improve the nominal quality of the product in form, but reduce the truth-value in content. Journalistic, worldly truths are neither like analytic mathematical truths which one person can deduce, or philosophical truths which yield to introspection and disciplined intentions to 'see.'

I think you pine for the comforting authoritativeness of a single point of view you can trust. The world has grown up. Mommy New York Times is dead. We must all listen to the noise and construct our own truths now.

Re: The Velocity of Ignorance, Social Media and “Citizen Journalism”

I wish to wish all pregnant women of good mood, easy pregnancy and natural sorts!
